Hundreds of richly decorated ivory and bone fragments from furniture and parts from at least three crossed-leg chairs, survived under seawater in an apsidal room at Kenchreai, the Eastern port of ancient Corinth. These excavated remains include fragments of an incised bone panel with a scene of an emperor and attendants, a thiasos, bucolic and hunt scenes, seated philosophers, erotes, and a miniature ivory Corinthian order supporting a bone arcade decorated with erotes. Decorative moldings and large bone rings suggest that most of these belonged to a luxuriously decorated chest. Dating to the fourth century, these objects provide an important addition to our knowledge of the artistic production of late Roman Egypt and the working of ivory, bone, and wood.

It is above all as a historian, concerned about the concrete facts of the evolution of Chinese society, that I intend to approach the history of ideas, conceptions and intellectual trends in China. The time is no longer when we pictured the history of China as a long, uniform series of practically interchangeable periods. The history of China has a meaning, just like ours. It has been marked by ruptures and has known periods of very rapid evolution. Who admits that men are products of their society and their history, the XVI th , XVII th and XVIII th Chinese centuries constitute a privileged period of research. The upheavals and social, economic and political transformations that have taken place during these three centuries, the richness and diversity of intellectual life, the evolution of ideas, the large number of independent minds and remarkable personalities make them the exceptional interest.

The Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology, first published in 1976, is the official publication of the Midwest Archaeological Conference, Inc. The journal publishes original papers on the archaeology of the region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Plains, and from the Boreal Forests to the mid-South, or closely related topical issues. While the journal focuses on the publication of new and primary prehistoric and historic period archaeological data from this heartland region of the United States and Canada, it also regularly publishes on broader theoretical and methodological issues relevant to an understanding of the archaeology of the midcontinent. Papers are analytic, often incorporate cutting edge field and laboratory methods, applied in clear theoretical, problem oriented contexts. Most journal volumes consist of stand-alone articles, but the MCJA occasionally publishes volumes of papers that address specific themes, sites, or topics.
